SAN FRANCISCO: OpenAI on Thursday launched GPT-5.2, the latest version of its flagship artificial-intelligence model, marking one of the company's most significant updates this year as it faces intensifying competition in the AI industry.
The new model family, offered in three variants called Instant, Thinking and Pro, is designed to deliver sharper reasoning, stronger coding performance and deeper understanding of long and complex documents. OpenAI says GPT-5.2 outperforms human professionals on benchmark tests covering 44 occupations and handles "economically valuable" tasks such as spreadsheets, presentations and multi-step planning more efficiently.
The launch comes just days after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman declared an internal "code red," redirecting engineering resources toward improving ChatGPT amid competitive pressure from Google's Gemini 3 model.
"We designed GPT-5.2 to unlock even more economic value for people," OpenAI's CEO of applications, Fidji Simo, said at a press briefing. "It's better at creating spreadsheets, building presentations, writing code, perceiving images, understanding long context, using tools and then linking complex, multi-step projects."
GPT-5.2 begins rolling out to paid ChatGPT users and developers via the company's API, with earlier versions such as GPT-5.1 remaining available for a limited time. The update also reflects a strategic shift away from planned noncore features as OpenAI focuses on core model performance and enterprise use cases.
Analysts say the rapid rollout illustrates how fierce the battle for AI dominance has become among Silicon Valley's leading tech firms.
