Bandcamp bans AI music, promises to keep music human

SAN FRANCISCO: andcamp has moved to block AI-generated music from its platform, saying it wants to preserve human creativity and protect independent artists in the face of rising use of generative artificial intelligence.

In a blog post titled "Keeping Bandcamp Human," published Jan. 13, the streaming and direct-to-fan music service said it will ban "music and audio that is generated wholly or in substantial part by AI" from its site. The company also said any AI used to mimic other artists or styles violates its policies on impersonation and intellectual property.

"Today we are fortifying our mission by articulating our policy on generative AI, so that musicians can keep making music, and so that fans have confidence that the music they find on Bandcamp was created by humans," the statement said.

Under the new guidelines, users can flag tracks that appear to be predominantly AI-generated, and Bandcamp reserves the right to remove suspected content. The move positions Bandcamp as one of the first major music platforms to take such a clear stance against AI content, in contrast with larger streaming services that have largely focused on tackling AI-enabled copyright infringement and impersonation rather than outright banning AI works.

The policy reflects Bandcamp's broader mission of strengthening the connection between fans and the artists who make music, a community that has increasingly questioned the role of automated systems in creative production. Critics of AI music argue that it dilutes the artisanal quality and emotional authenticity that many listeners value.

The announcement arrives amid broader industry debate over how to regulate AI use in music creation and distribution, and whether platforms should protect human-created work as AI tools become more sophisticated and widespread.
